SnowBall Classic IDSF International DanceSport Competition

We are very pleased to announce that the SnowBall Classic will include a Latin Formation Team competition on the Friday (Feb. 2) schedule. Featuring teams from the US and maybe Austria, and of course our very own Canadian Team, The UBC Dance Club Formation Team. The competition will be run by IDSF Formation Team rules and will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver. See their website for details at www.snowballclassic.com.

Holiday Ball

As everyone is slowly changing from vacation mode to back-to-school (or work!), I will wrap up the Dance Club holiday mood by thanking all the people and organizations that helped make Holiday Ball a great success.
Firstly, thank you to our many door prize sponsors that generously donated all sorts of fabulous gifts:

Special thanks to Art's Flowers & Gifts, Radisson Hotel and Fairchild TV for their continuous support of UBC Dance Club events. Art's Flowers & Gifts sponsored all the flowers for Holiday Ball, the Radisson Hotel provided the beautiful Ballroom complimentary and Fairchild TV sent out a crew to take some footage for their program.

Secondly, thanks to our wonderful performers at Holiday Ball, including Conant Liu & Faye Hung, Owen Reid & Renata Scholefield, John Lee & Irene Bremsak-Lee, Mike Gorenchikin & Tamara Bedaux, Jeffrison Ho & Pamela Cheng, and, of course, the UBC Dance Club Latin Formation Team. A crew from Fairchild TV's "What's On" program was at Holiday Ball filming some of the highlights. Check out their program on Thursday, January 4th at 10 pm (Cable 66).

Thirdly, a personal thank you to Penny and Natalia for their willingness to do a short but free lesson at Holiday Ball. In case you didn't know, they were asked (on the spot) to teach and had no preparation or expectation of doing a lesson. Also, thanks to David Huang (Equipment Manager) for "leading" us through the Vogue (line dance).

Finally, thanks to everyone who came out to Holiday Ball to be part of the event! We hope you enjoyed your evening of dancing and socializing.

Formation Team to showcase at the Grand Ball

The UBC Dance Club Formation Team (also known as the Canadian Representative Formation Team) is holding a Martini Night Fundraiser on October 6th, 2000 at the Heritage Hall on Main and 15th Ave. Come and support the Team's trip to Austria where they will be competing in the World Formation Team Championship this coming November. Party at the Babalu Night Club

The UBC Dance Club Formation Team will be holding a "Club Night" fundraiser at BaBalu's on Thursday, August 31. BaBalu's will graciously donate proceeds from ticket sales to the team to help them pay for the many expenses they will soon incur. The only catch is --> you NEED to buy your ticket from a FORMATION TEAM member in advance!!!

The UBC Dance Club Formation team will be performing at the DanceSport BC hosted, "Dancing at the Robson Square" on August 25, 2000. Selected formation team couples will also perform.

Dancing At the Dock

It is August again and registration for the all returning members and/or UBC students will start on Saturday, 12 August at the Dance Club's "Dancing at the Dock" event to be held at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver. There will be dancing and the Club will be taking registrations from noon to 4pm on the 12th and 2 to 4pm on the 19th of August. There will also be demos from selected formation team couples. So please make sure to attend.

Directions on how to get to Lonsdale Quay:

Lonsdale Quay is a mall with a dock facing the waterfront side. The easiest way to get to Lonsdale Quay is to take the Skytrain to Waterfront Station (the northwest terminus) and walk to the Seabus terminals. The Seabus will take you directly to Lonsdale Quay which is where it docks.
Driving there from Vancouver, you will need to go across the Lion's Gate Bridge and exit to Marine Drive going eastward. Keep driving east on Marine until you hit Lonsdale Street. Turn right onto Lonsdale and head south until you reach the end of the street. Lonsdale Quay is located on the waterfront.

RADISSON SUMMER DANCE FIESTA TO SUPPORT UBC DANCE TEAM REPRESENTING CANADA AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Richmond, BC - - The Radisson President Hotel & Suites is organizing jointly with UBC Dance Club, the Radisson Summer Dance Fiesta, an evening of packed ballroom dancing entertainment and social dancing on July 2 at the Hotel's Ballroom. Part of the proceeds of the evening will go towards supporting UBC Dance Team's representation of Canada at the 2000 World Championships of Latin DanceSport Formation Teams in Austria in November.
"The highlight of the evening's entertainment will be a preview of the UBC Team's International Style Latin America competition dance repertoire. The rhythmic music, sensational choreography and months of tireless coaching by Viktor Yasel and rehearsals by team members make it a performance not to be missed. I urge all dancing enthusiasts to support the Team by purchasing tickets to the Radisson Summer Dance Fiesta and share a fun-filled evening together", said Jack Lee, President of the Radisson President Hotel & Suites.
Tickets at $30 each include complimentary beverages and snacks. Gustos Euro Bistro at the lobby level of the Radisson Hotel is also offering guests attending the Dance Fiesta, a special discount of 15% (food only) for dinner on the evening of July 2.

Martini Night 2 -- Practice makes perfect!

The UBC Latin Formation Team wishes to thank everyone who attended Martini Night 2 on Wednesday, November 10th! We didn't think it would be possible to top the success of our first Martini Night-- but we did! Thank you for helping to make it a fabulous party and an excellent fundraiser!

Special thanks to John-Carlos Jang for volunteering to be our DJ, Mariano Cusano and Bruno Fiorvento for bartending, Warren & Romana, Chris & Andree, and Joel & Clara for the entertaining demos, and to everyone that provided us with great prizes for the balloons (see list below) !

Martini Night -- What a BLAST!!!

Warren selling balloons On September 17, 1999 the UBC Dance Club's Latin Formation Team held its first fundraising event. We called it the "Swing and Latin Martini Lounge Night." It took place at the enchanting Heritage Hall located at Main and 15th. The atmosphere was… hmm,… classy with a twist of friendliness and a dash of fun - shaken not stirred! Those who attended looked amazingly glamorous (especially with Martini glasses in hand) -there were countless feather boas and fedoras too!

The night started off with a swing lesson (taught by the Formations Team's very own Warren and Romana) to welcome those that had never danced before… lots of laughs and lots of fun! The rest of the evening was filled with non-stop dancing !!! The crowd was entertained by three incredible demonstrations. First, by the kids - weren't they amazing!?! Then, by Nestor and his sexy salsa "Trio" with Sasha and Laura -lucky guy! And last but not least… UBCDC's president Faye and her partner Aries performed a sizzling Latin demo. The prize balloon popping and the limbo contest were among some of the other highlights of the fabulous evening. It was a fun-filled night beginning to end!limbo

The Formation Team wishes to thank everyone who attended for helping make the party such a success !!! A very special "thank-you" to all those that donated prizes for the balloons and to those who volunteered their services (see list below) - your generosity and support is greatly appreciated!
